Nature Walk: Herpetofauna of New Jersey // 8.25.23

  • Friends Of Princeton Open Space 57 Mountain Ave Princeton, NJ, 08540 United States (map)

What's a "herp" you say? The term “herp” is how scientists casually refer to a reptile (lizards, snakes, turtles) or amphibian (frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts).

Join Esteban Mendez, a Friends of Princeton Open Space (FOPOS) 2023 Land Steward Intern who has conducted research on native snakes, as we explore the diverse and amazing species of herps that crawl, climb, swim, and slither through the forests of New Jersey and right here in Princeton. This free walk will take place on Friday, August 25th from 2:00-4:00pm. Join us!

About NJ herps: New Jersey is host to a great variety of herps, including 16 frog and toad, 16 salamander, 3 lizard, 22 snake, and 13 freshwater turtle species. Many of these organisms play important roles in their ecosystems such as recycling nutrients, acting as predator/prey, and by serving as indicators of ecosystem health. Many herps are somewhat elusive and understudied, thus on this walk we will help you learn more about those that live right here in the Billy Johnson Mountain Lakes Nature Preserve.

We will encounter turtles and frogs on our journey, but we are also likely to see snakes and salamanders. We will also unravel the workings of the habitats they call home and the diversity of unique organisms they share them with.

What to bring and wear: Come prepared with boots, water, and long pants, and prepare to be amazed by these animals. Activities are appropriate for all ages and will include hiking and searching under pieces of wood and stones.

RSVP: Please RSVP by selecting a ticket. All ages and abilities are welcome. On the day-of the event, please arrive prior to 2:00pm so that we can begin on-time. Full details will be sent upon RSVPing.

We hope you can join FOPOS for this seasonal exploration!
